Software Architect at Dazzcode

When building a software platform, premature optimization wastes capital, but architectural negligence guarantees downtime as soon as traffic spikes.

The goal of sound software architecture is evolutionary design—making structural decisions that let you move quickly today while ensuring you won't need a total system rewrite when your platform reaches 10,000 or 100,000 active users.

At Dazzcode, we follow this rigorous SaaS Architecture Checklist across all client builds, code audits, and scaling projects.

1. Database & Data Modeling Layer

The relational database is the heart of almost every B2B SaaS. Schema design mistakes made early are the hardest and most expensive to fix later.

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] Strict Foreign Keys & Cascades: Never rely solely on application-level logic to preserve referential integrity.
  • [ ] Foreign Key Indexing: Ensure every tenantid, userid, and foreign key column has an explicit B-tree index to prevent full table scans on relational joins.
  • [ ] UUIDv7 or CUID2 for Primary Keys: Use time-ordered unique identifiers instead of sequential auto-incrementing integers to avoid exposing business metrics (e.g. total customer count in URLs) and prevent write-head contention in distributed systems.
  • [ ] Connection Pooling (PgBouncer): Never connect serverless functions directly to a raw PostgreSQL instance without a connection pooler like PgBouncer or Supabase Supavisor to prevent max connection exhaustion.
  • [ ] Zero-Downtime Migration Strategy: Use tools like Prisma Migrate, Drizzle Kit, or Golang Migrate with non-locking schema updates (e.g., CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY).
sqlBASH/TYPESCRIPT
-- Example: Creating a non-blocking index in PostgreSQL
CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY idx_organizations_tenant_created
ON organizations (tenant_id, created_at DESC);

2. Authentication, Multi-Tenancy & Authorization

Cross-tenant data leaks and unauthorized privilege escalations are fatal to SaaS reputation.

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] PostgreSQL Row-Level Security (RLS): Configure database policies enforcing tenant separation at the query engine level. Read our guide on SOC2-Ready Architecture.
  • [ ] Hierarchical RBAC: Implement deterministic role checks (Owner, Admin, Member, Billing) with middleware guards on all mutations.
  • [ ] Session Invalidation & JWT Expiry: Short-lived access tokens (15 minutes) with rotating refresh tokens stored in secure, HttpOnly, SameSite=Lax cookies.
  • [ ] Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): TOTP (Google Authenticator) support with encrypted backup recovery codes.
  • [ ] Web Standard Webhook Verification: Cryptographic HMAC signature verification (SHA-256) on incoming webhooks from Stripe, M-Pesa, or Resend.

3. Asynchronous Job Processing & Background Queues

Long-running operations must never execute synchronously within HTTP request cycles. Doing so degrades API response times and risks timeout errors.

CODEBASH/TYPESCRIPT
[User Browser] --(HTTP Request)--> [Next.js API Handler]
                                           |
                                   (Enqueue Job Payload)
                                           v
                                   [Redis BullMQ Queue]
                                           |
                                   (Process Asynchronously)
                                           v
[Background Worker] ---> [Send Email / Generate PDF / Sync Stripe]

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] Decoupled Queue Workers: Offload PDF generation, transactional emails, AI LLM embeddings, and external API syncs to Redis-backed queues (BullMQ, Celery, or AWS SQS).
  • [ ] Idempotent Job Execution: Ensure workers can safely re-execute retried jobs without duplicating payments or sending duplicate notifications.
  • [ ] Dead-Letter Queues (DLQ): Route failed tasks to a DLQ with automated alert notifications for engineering triage.

4. Caching & Edge Performance

Reducing database load through strategic caching directly cuts server infrastructure expenses.

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] Redis In-Memory Caching: Cache frequently accessed, slow-changing records (user permissions, workspace settings, global configurations).
  • [ ] Stale-While-Revalidate (SWR): Implement HTTP caching headers and Next.js tag-based revalidation (revalidateTag) for dynamic pages and API responses.
  • [ ] Static Asset CDN Offloading: Serve all images, fonts, and static JavaScript bundles through Cloudflare or AWS CloudFront with immutable cache headers.
  • [ ] Optimized Image Pipelines: Automatic WebP/AVIF compression with responsive sizing attributes.

5. Security & Rate Limiting

Protect your API endpoints and authentication routes from brute-force attacks and denial-of-service abuse.

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] Global & Route-Level Rate Limiting: Apply token-bucket or sliding-window rate limiters using Upstash Redis on public login, signup, and API routes.
  • [ ] Input Sanitization & Schema Validation: Enforce strict runtime schema validation using Zod or TypeBox on every incoming request payload.
  • [ ] Security Headers: Enforce Content-Security-Policy (CSP), X-Frame-Options: DENY, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, and Strict-Transport-Security (HSTS).
  • [ ] CORS Isolation: Restrict allowed Cross-Origin Resource Sharing origins to your exact production domain.

6. Observability, Logging & Error Tracking

You cannot optimize what you do not measure.

Key Requirements:

  • [ ] Centralized Error Monitoring: Sentry or Bugsnag integration with sourcemap uploads to track uncaught exceptions with full stack traces.
  • [ ] Structured JSON Logging: Emit structured log events containing timestamp, level, tenantId, traceId, and message for log ingestion (Better Stack, Datadog, or Grafana Loki).
  • [ ] Synthetic Health Check Probes: An automated /api/health endpoint pinging database connectivity and Redis availability every 60 seconds.
  • [ ] Core Web Vitals Monitoring: Track LCP, FID, and CLS performance across real user sessions.
